I don't understand how this book has such a high rating. I could not make it past the first quarter of the book. The level of repetition is ridiculous. Also the amount of time they spend hiding in the woods for nothing to happen?! All they did was hide from anyone. I can't believe Robert doesn't have men looking out for her that they did not run across. By the time they made it to her cousin's keep and were repeating the story for the fourth time, I noped out.
I love Beauty and the Beast retellings, but this is not one, despite the title (my first mistake). Then I read the entire book, hoping it would improve (second mistake: spoiler - it didn't).
Glytha is the beauty and Thayer is the beast (he has red hair?). He marries her because of a promise made but doesn't trust her because he knows she's going to cheat on him. This is because a woman cheated on him in his youth. She wants to be a good wife, but honestly, he's the worst. Meanwhile, there's all this drama that just seemed stupid and made the book way too long. It's an earlier Howell book and I read the reissue, but it could use a rewrite.… (lisätietoja)

I read a lot of it, and found the characters and plot interesting. I get thrown out of the narrative when authors use the word "weeping" for body parts that are not eyes, especially in love scenes. I might try again.
