- Annie E. Holdsworth, née Eliza Ann, was born in Jamaica, a daughter of the Rev. William Holdsworth, an English missionary. She went to London on the death of her father. There she worked on the staff of Review of Reviews and became co-editor with Lady Henry Somerset of The Woman's Signal, a weekly feminist magazine. She began writing as a girl, and published about a dozen novels, including Joanna Traill, Spinster (1893), her best known work, and The Years That the Locust Hath Eaten (1895). In 1898, she married the poet Eugene Lee-Hamilton, half-brother of writer Vernon Lee. The couple lived in Italy and had a child who died in infancy.
