Very short read but had a lot packed in such a small story. It was alright. It kept reminding me of Shade by Jeri Smith Ready with the way that wraiths were known to react. I liked Shade much better than this one though because of the additional back story and world building included in the longer novel. I think I would have enjoyed this one more if it would have been a lot more fleshed out.

The Ravenous Dead by Natasha Hoar is a new ebook-only novella published by Carina Press. Continuing Carina Press's trend of releasing series of related novellas, The Ravenous Dead follows on from The Stubborn Dead. I haven't read The Stubborn Dead and, while I could guess vaguely what it might have been about, I didn't feel I needed to have read it before The Ravenous Dead nor that The Ravenous Dead was likely to have spoiled the earlier story for me (of course, I might be wrong on that second part, who knows).

Rachel is a rescue medium which means that it's her job to help free souls which are stuck on Earth and deal with certain supernatural creatures. In this novella, a reaper, an undead soul-eater, is ravaging Vancouver and leaving a trail of bodies in it's wake. Rachel sets out to stop it with her protege (with his own special powers) Kit.

It was a little bit gory at the start when the bodies were described but after that the story was mainly action and a little bit of detective work.

There were a few scenes from the reaper's point of view which felt a bit odd. They seemed to make the reader sympathise a bit with the reaper (who didn't end up as a particularly soul-thirsty reaper on purpose) but then ended with him being an emotionless killing machine. It turned out there was a reason for this, story-wise, but it confused me a bit.

There was a nice hook at the end for a possible future story which definitely made me want to read more.

Overall, this wasn't a bad story but it didn't elicit any particularly strong emotions in me. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys urban fantasy and is looking for a quick and action-heavy story to pass the time.

3.5 / 5 stars

The Stubborn Head is a nice little novella, coming in at 20,000 words. The basic story is staightforward: Rachel works as the regional representative for the Order of Rescue Mediums in Vancouver. (Woo, Canadian setting!) The Order has strict rules about engaging spirits: once you start, you can't stop or fail, or you're out. And not just out but shunned and erased, with your powers restricted, so the stakes are pretty high when Rachel confronts a wraith that behaves atypically.

I really like the world that Natasha Hoar has set up. Obviously, there's not a ton of world building since the word count is low but I did have a good sense of the series mythology by the end of the story. It comes out in bits and pieces but it's all there by the end, which makes me look forward to the second story in the Lost Souls series.

That being said, I did feel like the author was trying to cram too much story into The Stubborn Dead. There are side plots like the Janus stuff mentioned in the blurb that felt a little forced. I think the story would have been better served by having only a single side plot since 20,000 words really isn't that much. I applaud Natasha Hoar's ambition but it made reading a bit jerky at first since the transitions between plot lines felt abrupt at the beginning. I hope that future stories will deal with these storylines and I look forward to seeing what happens next.

Stubborn Dead is a novella and I feel its meant for longer book. That their is a back story I don't know.

Rachel Miller is a member of the Order of Rescue Mediums Their job is release trapped spirits. Their are a bunch of rules they have about what they must do or what they should not do.

Rachel is called out on a job and things go wrong. It is not the usual spirits that is haunting the house. The ownner won't tell her whats going on. Rachel is being set up for somthing. Thier is some group watching her.

I wish the story was longer. I want to understand its secrets so hope another book is in the works.
