Whitey Herzog (1931–2024)

Whitey Herzog is one of the most baseball-wise and outspoken men in the game. This is his diagnosis of what troubles the game of baseball, and how it can be fixed. I must say, he makes an excellent case for all his suggestions, the most important one of which is giving some equal opportunity to the financial playing field. He also rails against two evils in baseball that gnaw at me, the DH rule and interleague play. Whitey Herzog, former manager for the St. Louis Cardinals (and other teams), who got them a World Series win in 1982 and to the Series in 1985 and 1987, is one of the most intelligent and innovative baseball minds around. He is also an old-fashioned straight-from-the-shoulder type of guy, and a colorful and interesting baseball writer. This book is a biography and something of a primer on how to play baseball as it should be. A little self-serving, but probably deservedly so, the book also impresses me with how prescient Herzog was in many ways in 1986 when he wrote this book.… (lisätietoja)
