Tamar Herzog is Monroe Gutman Professor of Latin American Affairs and Radcliffe Alumnae Professor in the History Department at Harvard University, and an affiliate of Harvard Law School. She is the author of several books, including the award-winning Frontiers of Possession.

Este libro analiza la formación de las fronteras entre España y Portugal tanto en Europa como en América Latina desde el Medioevo hasta la Edad Moderna. Cuestiona la narrativa habitual que afirma que las demarcaciones nacionales eran sustancialmente el producto de la guerra y de la actividad diplomática. En su lugar, estudia la negociación e imposición, a veces de manera violenta, de derechos territoriales entre agentes que reclamaban antiguas o deseaban nuevas posesiones: campesinos, nobles, eclesiásticos, misioneros, colonizadores e indígenas. Herzog describe ambas orillas del Atlántico como un único espacio imperial. Rather more of an extended essay than anything else, Prof. Herzog has a number of problems she sets for her self. Apart from reintroducing law to history, the main mission here is to tease out Portuguese and Spanish national self-understanding from the process by which boundaries were first established in the New World, and then how those boundary conflicts fed back into sovereignty disputes back on the Iberian Peninsula. This all being complicated by how Portuguese and Spanish historians have been reluctant to grapple with the meaning of the sixty-year period of unified Habsburg rule until rather recently. Does this work meander? A bit. But if you're interested in the process by which national identity is constructed this book is well worth your time.… (lisätietoja)
