Timeless stories of sensational exploits and extraordinary deads abound in the martial arts, but because most of them have been transmitted orally through generations, they have gone virtually undocumented-until now.

In Karate: Zen, Pen, and Sword, renowned author and martial arts scholar Randall Hassell presents a collection of provocative anecdotes, both anicent and modern, which depict, through the philosophy and actions of martial arts masters and Zen masters, how people have overcome obstacles and resolved conflicts in their lives.

Accorrding to the author, 'Martial art, in its highest form, is a holistic practice of spiritual, intellectual, and physical dimensions. In this book Zen represents the spiritual dimension, Pen represents the intellectual dimension, and Sword represents the physical dimension of the martial arts. The problems appearing in each story are resolved through the means of one and sometimes all three ingredients of Zen, Pen, and Sword.'

Karate: Zen, Pen, and Sword is a stimulating journey through the history, legends, and folklore of karate, in particular, and the martial arts in general.

A must-have book for those interested in the deeper meanings of the martial arts and a valuable addition to every martial artist's library!

Randall G. Hassell began his study of Karate in 1960, and received his black belt from the Japan Karate Association in 1968. For almost five decades, he has devoted himself to the teaching and study of karate-do and other martial arts. In addition to teaching in his school in St. Louis, Missouri, Mr. Hassell oversees the instruction of thousands of students and travels extensively, lecturing and officiating.

Nakayama Sensei was one of the most senior of students of Funakoshi Sensei, the founder of Shotokan Karate. It was due to his hard work & brilliance that we can enjoy his lasting legacy.

Although only a small book, the author Mr Hassell, has provided us with a mine of information about the origins of Shotokan Karate today, something that millions around the world enjoy & benefit immensely from.

Conducted in a question - answer interview style, we get an in-depth guide to how this major style of karate came about & was promulgated throughout the world. This is a rare chance to get closer to and look into the mind of one of Shotokan's greatest masters. As well as that, since Nakayama Sensei was very close to Funakoshi Sensei, we obtain a glimpse at the founders' thoughts & feelings on the subject.

You'll discover first hand the amount of effort that went into making sure that Shotokan was transmitted around the world as it should be and why it is not considered just as a sport. Not only that, you'll also learn how kumite (sparring) came about & perhaps why karate has still not been accepted as an Olympic sport.

Illustrated throughout with unique pictures of Nakayama Sensei teaching at various locations, this will be a book to treasure. It's my hope that other reviewers will agree with me that this book will turn out to be an important part of Shotokan's history.

For further insight into the origins of Shotokan do check out Gichin Funakoshi's 'Karate-do: My Way of Life' & Egami Sensei's 'The Heart of Karate-do'
