Mochitsura Hashimoto (1909–2000)

This is a necessary book for those interested in the misuse of the Japanese submarines in WWII in the Pacific. Instead of attempting the kind of anti-convoy effort that the Germans employed in the Atlantic, and that the USN was using against them in the Pacific, the IJN employed their resources in diffuse missions such as base bombardments, supply missions and prioritizing warship as opposed to transport targets. The USN benefited, as they could concentrate their anti-submarine forces around their invasion fleets and reap a harvest of IJN subs.
Hashimoto, the commander of the I-176, the sub that sank the USS Indianapolis, doesn't even see the flaw in the strategy. But, the Germans, with their air-borne reconnaissance, and more restricted waters could conduct their level of "Commerce Raiding". Perhaps the IJN simply had too much ocean to cover with the number of vessels and aircraft they were able to maintain.
Read this pioneer effort to analyze the IJN's position. The chronological organization is weak, and the book is far more interested in anecdotes than chronology, a considerable drawback.

2416 Sunk! The Story of the Japanese Submarine Fleet, 1941-1945 by Mochitsura Hashimoto translated by Commander E. H. M. Colegrave, RN (Ret.) (read 21 Oct 1991) This is a 1954 book by a Japanese submarine captain telling of Japanese submarines in World War II. It is oddly organized, and did not really tell a relevant, logical account, and was hopelessly non-chronological. I started the book some years ago, then laid it aside.
