I cannot imagine a more lush and complete chronicle of Rackham's life and art than this book. Hamilton carefully pairs the events of Rackham's life with his artistic developments, so that the narrative reads more like an artistic exploration than a biography - a positive effect in my opinion. At points, the text loops back on itself to re-discuss previous themes, but Hamilton does so in a way which ties the book neatly together rather than seeming repetitive. And then there's the illustrations. An excellent introduction to Turner's life and working methods. Full documented but written in a flowing and sympathetic manner, with a little more restraint than the same author's later work on Gainsborough. The book does not set out to be a full analysis of Turner's works, but the reader is signposted to other books which achieve that. Deals particularly well with the artistic and social milieu in which Turner worked in the first half of the 19th Century.

The style in which it is written is unusual for a full, properly referenced biography - apparently casual, almost conversational, with some over 21st century sensibilities thrown in. Not having read any other works by this author I am not sure whether this is usual for him or rather an attempt to better encompass those laddish and provincial aspects of Gainsborough himself which are explored in the book. At any rate, once you get used to it, it does not jar, and I would recommend this book.… (lisätietoja)
