Review of The Forest.

The Pale Green Dot continues where The Forest left off and expands the world significantly. We see a bit behind the curtain at just what the Forest is and how the world works.

The writing is significantly better as well, although could still use an editor. In particular, the first third or so of the Pale Green Dot jumps significantly from view point to view point, sometimes with only paragraphs in each. It's hard to read and almost put me off the book entirely, but it calms somewhat as you continue on.

By the time I reached the end, I was... left wanting more. There isn't really an ending to the Pale Green Dot any more than there was to the Forest. We're left with an answer that directly contradicts what we thought we knew throughout the book, with little more evidence to go on than we had for the Forest's side of the story. Really, there should be a third part to the story, with all three bundled together. Perhaps one day there will be.

That being said, it's a quick read and the world building is still wonderfully disturbing and visceral. In my opinion, it's worth reading just for that...… (lisätietoja)

It's rough, fairly obviously an author's early work and could probably be cleaned up somewhat by an editor. There are entirely too many scenes of non-stop action, running from one overly giant bug to another, trying and fighting to stay alive.

But at the same time, that's exactly what makes The Forest so oddly compelling. It grabs you by the scruff of your neck and doesn't let go, tossing you into a vividly terrifying world of giants bugs and even bigger snakes.

And that ending... well. Let's say that you really shouldn't read just The Forest. There's a reason The Forest and the [b:Pale Green Dot: Sequel to The Forest|36549857|Pale Green Dot Sequel to The Forest|Justin Groot|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1510023183i/36549857._SY75_.jpg|58282294] are sold together. The Forest just sorts of ends, but the Pale Green Dot picks up and keeps right on going. You really need to read both.

The Forest ist eine schnelle Lektüre, deren Aufhänger recht einfach erzählt ist: Aus der Perspektive von Tetris, einem Ranger, wird Der Wald erkundet, welcher in dieser Welt die Ozeane verdrängt hat. Interessanterweise gibt es geologische Hinweise, dass Ozeane in der Vergangenheit existiert haben, aber Der Wald ist halt Millionen Jahre alt und je weiter man sich in ihn vorwagt, desto ungestümer – und Ungetümer – werden die bewohnenden Kreaturen. Zuggroße Schlangen, haushohe Gottesanbeterinnen, fleischfressende Wespen, giftige Frösche groß wie Autos, all das wird normaler und normaler je weiter man vordringt. Der Wald kann bloß über den Luftweg überquert werden.

Die Erzählung bleibt Tetris (was bloß der Spitzname der Hauptfigur ist) sehr nahe, so dass man nicht viel über die Welt selbst weiß, aber die 'Küsten'städte wie San Diego existieren immer noch, die Amerikas wurden von den Europäern besiedelt, und im 15. Jahrhundert umsegelte Magellan in einem Luftschiff die Welt.
Leider hat sich der Autor bis auf diese Randnotizen nicht die Mühe gemacht, die notwendigen Änderungen zu erkunden, die in einer solche Welt nötig wären. Die USA sind immer noch die USA, es wurden Atombomben auf Hiroshima und Nagasaki abgeworfen (was einen interkontinentalen Weltkrieg nahelegt), und die Kultur ist im wesentlichen die gleiche, obwohl es seit Millionen von Jahren keine Ozeane gab. Genauso wäre ohne das Wasser und die ozeanischen Wettersysteme das Klima unglaublich anders.

Ich kann im nachhinein wegerklären, wieso die Welt so ähnlich zu unserer ist, trotz dieser einschneidenden Änderungen: Er wollte Geschichten mit Identifikationsfiguren und ähnlichem Setting zu unserem gestalten, die einem "Was wäre wenn" Szenario folgen, aber ich komme nicht umhin, mich nicht mit der Umsetzung anzufreunden. Ja, es ist ein Erstlingswerk, und wenn ich die Danksagung richtig interpretiere, hat das Buch wahrscheinlich genau so seinen Anfang genommen, einer Schreibaufforderung folgend à lá "Was wäre wenn die Ozeane Wälder wären," und für sowas ist die Qualität auch ausreichend. Aber für ein ganze Novelle reicht es leider nicht, da hätte noch mehr in den Hintergrund gesteckt werden müssen.
Man kann eine Welt ähnlich zu unserer schaffen, die aber auf anderen Fundamenten ruht.… (lisätietoja)
