I have been dipping in and out of Green's truly excellent Ask a Manager workplace advice blog for years. It is THE place to go for a combination of WTF work scenarios, practical advice, laugh out loud questions and answers, and some of the best communication advice on the internet. I'd always been curious about how the blog would play in book form and when she ran a super sale on the Kindle version I took the plunge. The book is divided into four sections: conversations with your boss, conversations with your co-workers, conversations when you're the boss, and conversations with your job interviewer -- truly something for everyone! Each section is a combination of advice on common scenarios along with sidebars with letters submitted to the blog along with Green's answers. The pace is very energetic and readable and I could see referring back to this book again in the future. My favorite part (in both the blog and the book) is the modeling of how exactly to say things when you are approaching a weird, difficult, or uncomfortable communication scenario. We spend a lot of our lives at work, and this book gives the reader practical advice on how to make that easier for ourselves and our co-workers.… (lisätietoja)

As a faithful and enthusiastic reader of the blog, when Alison mentioned that this book was on sale, I scooped it up!

This book is divided into 4 sections: conversations with your boss, conversations with your co-workers, conversations when you're the boss, and conversations with your job interviewer. In each section, Alison offers advice on 30-50 of the most common scenarios you may encounter in your working life, no matter what your role. I am not a manager and I have no desire to move into management, but it's still helpful to see things from everyone's perspective when approaching a situation.

From the blog, I've learned a lot about how to navigate certain aspects of my own working life, which has been extremely helpful. This is basically the blog boiled down to the basics. Some of the more infamous letters are here (such as the 'call my boyfriend Master' letter in the co-worker section), with Alison's specific advice.

I'd love to see a collection of columns from the blog, but barring that, this is the next best thing. If you are in the working world, I highly recommend you read this!

This one of those rare management books that is SO practical that I may purchase a copy for myself. I plan to turn to Ms Green time and again for her wordsmithing and calm, confident advice.

There are only a few general principles in this book (all good) but her myriad examples of how to specifically address situations with what kind of language is helpful. The book provides inspiration and confidence to have the difficult conversations that are necessary and appropriate. Things can sometimes feel unnecessarily tricky in the modern workspace and the author is good at reminding us that common sense, decency, and forthright communication can solve most dilemmas.
