Breaking up a band that you spent most of your adult life listening to over money and power (within the band) makes this a hard read, because you come into it with the bias towards being pissed, but I think Steve Gorman showed enough of the light side of the band to counteract the selfishness, pettiness, and ego of the Robinson Brothers. Watching, and now reading the behind the scenes details, of the absolute downward spiral the Black Crowes were on were very disheartening. I know Rich and Chris Robinson are now back together, with a new incarnation of the Black Crowes, but there will always only be the originals. True classics. The Brothers have said that the reason why other band members were not invited back to rejoin the band this time was so they wouldn't slip back into the bad habits, the backstabbing, and the overall toxic behaviors of the past. I still stand with Steve Gorman on what he had to say in this book about his time in the band, and the actions of The Brothers.… (lisätietoja)

I didn't know what to expect when I picked this one up. Back in the early 90's I was an avid listener to Shake Your Money Maker. When the band player with Junkyard in Murfreesboro, I was in the crowd dancing and hollering with a packed house.

Over the years though, the Black Crowes had become too self indulgent, too jam band-ish, and too seeped in marijuana for me. Like many others my interest wafted away. I generally lost interest in a band that I'd really enjoyed.

Over the years I've come to know many of the people involved with the Crowe's story. I was curious how they would be portrayed. In the past they hadn't always been treated kindly. I needn't have worried, Gorman is genuinely kind with everyone. Even the many shots at the Robinson brothers are tempered with love.

This is a book that tells tales and names names, but not in a salacious manner. Praise and condemnation are handed out in equal doses. Better yet, his narrative makes me remember why I initially fell in love with the Crowes all those years ago. This is a good read that I strongly recommend.
