In "The Mill" lofty idealism and delicate romance are mixed with action-packed drama. Gjellerup tells an exciting story about a miller who, in the face, commits a double kill but is hit by scruples and a sense of consciousness that leads to a religious breakthrough. While the environment is drawn with realistic precision, Gjellerup clearly shows his psychological depth drills, and the guilt of a human being, similar to the ones described by the Russian master Fjodor Dostoevsky.

Gjellerup wrote this in 1889 and set it in Germany (not his native Denmark). Our Danish narrator meets and falls in love with Minna, while on holiday in Saxony. But Minna has a past - another lover (also a Dane) with whom she never quite broke it off...
Gjellerup writes in the German Romantic style, lots of picturesque scenery as our lovers go for forest walks. I found the plot silly and couldn't summon any sympathy for Minna or Harald. How on earth did Gjellerup win the Nobel Prize, given that his contemporaries included such geniuses as Thomas Mann?
I read this as part of my program to try the work of every Nobel Prize winner, but would have to say - don't bother with this one!
