Lyhyt elämäkerta
Natalia Ginzburg, née Levi, was born in Palermo, Sicily, to a family of scholars and intellectuals. Her father was pioneering biologist and professor Giuseppe Levi. She published her first novella at age 17, and in her 20s, she was the first person to translate Proust's novel Du côté de chez Swann (Swann's Way) into Italian. In 1938, she married Leone Ginzburg, an editor, political activist, and teacher, with whom she had three children. As Jews and anti-fascists, they were punished by Mussolini's government with internal exile in a remote area of Abruzzi. After the Allied invasion, they secretly went to Rome to continue working for the Italian resistance, but Leone was captured, tortured, and executed by the Nazis in 1944. Natalia's first novel La strada che va in città (The Road to the City) was published in 1942 under a pseudonym, but subsequently she used the name Natalia Ginzburg (sometimes misspelled Ginzberg). Moving back to Rome at the end of the war, she worked as an editor for the publisher Einaudi for many years while writing her novels, plays, essays, and short stories, including Tutti I nostri ieri (1952), Valentino (1957), Piccole virtù (1962), Caro Michele (1973), and La Famiglia Manzoni (1983). In 1950, she remarried to Gabriele Baldini, a professor of English literature at the University of Trieste, with whom she had two more children. She won the Strega Prize in 1963 for Lessico Famigliare (Family Sayings), a semi-autobiographical work about her family's anti-fascist life. Always politically involved, Natalia was elected to the Italian Parliament as an independent left-wing deputy in 1983 and again in 1987.

Una prosa límpida. El artículo sobre el feminismo es imperdible.

There is so much to say about this little collection of essays that I'm going to have to read it again. I loved it. Natalia Ginsburg is a powerful writer and what I'm left with after this first reading is a sense of self-confidence. This is a woman who knows who she is. But it's her exploration of doubts and insecurities that create this impression. I think it was half through the piece ''He and I' when I realised what a powerful writer she was and how writing about opposites can be so self-affirming. I laughed out loud at her examination of London and the English, a piece that was really about longing for home. I found the lack of certainly and permanence in a post-war world strangely poignant having been burnt out by bush fire and expecting another. I'm still thinking about the signature piece, 'The Little Virtues' which somehow embodies what I'm trying to say about her work in that it is about the 'big' virtues and what is really important. Thanks for sending me this Jim.… (lisätietoja)

Thanks for this Jim. It was not only a delightful read but a lovely edition with its clear print and end folds. Plenty to laugh out-loud at too in this wonderfully rich evocation of a family through a generation. Natalia Ginzburg writes so well that the book just rolls along in its various rhythms and cadences. Moments of profound reflection suddenly pulled me up - such as

The post-war period, then, was very sad and full of dejection after the joyful harvest of its early days. Many pulled away and isolated themselves again either in their dream worlds, or in whatever random job they'd taken in a hurry in order to earn a living, jobs that seemed insignificant and dreary after so much hullaballoo. In any case, everyone soon forgot that brief, illusory moment of shared existence. p.217
