I do admit I would not have finished if it wasn’t an audiobook (62 hours of audiobook!), but I’m so glad I listened to it. More focus and attention to detail than virtually anyone wants, this is still an astoundingly great biography. I highly recommend it if you want to understand Illinois and Chicago politics, the self-making of Barack Obama, and some of the facts that were mired in hype and headlines as they happened.

I’d love to see a second volume really unpacking the years once inside Senate and White House, as those are basically all epilogue in this book. I think part of that might have been the very carefully manicured image that Obama had once he reached those high offices (Jeremiah Wright and Tony Rezko notwithstanding).… (lisätietoja)

Very good book. I was born in 1965 so don't remember much but thoroughly enjoyed this book. Author discusses Montgomery Bus Boycott and formation of SCLC. There are many details of the campaigns pursued by SCLC and all the different figures involved in the organization. One thing I learned that I was not aware of was the staff issues and disorganization of some of the SCLC campaigns. Good biography of King and details his issues with SCLC, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and the FBI. Really enjoyed this one.… (lisätietoja)

I read an excerpt of this biography to my class before we start Obama's back to school speech during one of our units. I think this book gives insight on Obama and his beliefs.

I am a great admirer of MLK but recognize he was a hero with feet of clay. This book tells the story of the FBI wire taps, and opposition through the civil-rights movement. They began with concerns about MLK's association with a 'known' communist, Stan Levison. While nothing could be proved about King's communist affiliations, the wiretaps and harassment of King continued because of King's moral failings (i.e. affairs) and increasingly radicalized views (anti-Vietnam war, Poor People's Movement, etc). Also there were those in government and the FBI who had a personal vendetta against King.

Garrow is convincing that the FBI is not always the most reliable or best at interpretting data, especially when there was a racial and political bias against King; however this isn't the best written book and difficult to follow if your knowledge of the major players is spotty.
