An interesting read but perhaps only of interest to the odd bod like me, who's fascinated by how some supposedly 'this year' things turn out to be perennial. Garbett writes for example, of individualism, freedom, justice and truth in the context of ideals that emerged from Greece as well as from Christianity and its Hebrew heritage - could have been a commentary on the currently (2014) atheist responses to D Cameron's (UK Prime Minister's) declaration that UK is a Christian country:

"The ideal of perfect justice comes from the Greeks, the Roman Stoics, and Hebrew prophets . . . . this was reinforced by Christianity . . ." Garbett writes. However he refutes the atheist position that we owe it all to the Greeks and the Romans:

" . . . it is a matter of serious doubt as to how far these ideals will survive if there is a general falling away from the faith of which they are the fruit . . . it is a matter both of deduction and observation that the more strongly Christianity is held, the more vigorously will the ideals flourish which have come from it." In abbreviating this I don't do full justice to his cogent arguments and his clear sympathy with 'other views' - truly his is a Christian approach!
