Quilt Blocks Around the World by Debra Gabel contains 50 applique patterns about cities around the world. This is the second book by Gabel. Her previous book was Quilt Blocks Across America. Both books would be useful for quilts for a traveler, as memory quilts, or even for children learning geography.
Quilt Blocks Around the World contains patterns that are only 6” square, but Gabel recommends enlarging the blocks by 200% to make a 12” finished block. I would also recommend this. When I first looked at the book, my thoughts were that there were too many small pieces for a 6” block. The appliqué patterns are very detailed, and by enlarging you will be able to work with pieces twice the size as in the patterns. Gabel also recommends using thread or fabric paints if you want to make a 6” block, and the details are too small.
If you travel or are making a quilt for a gift for someone who has traveled, these blocks in the quilt would be wonderful. You could also add some actual photos printed on fabric, showing the actual destination. Gabel suggests using a moderate amount of fiber embellishments.
I would recommend this book to people who like doing appliqué, but if you haven’t learned how to do that , Quilt Blocks Around the World will teach you in the book’s beginning!
