Also known as John Fletcher Cooke, Fletcher was born in Burnham, Buckinghamshire, England, on August 8, 1911. He received a degree from the University of Paris in 1928 and an M.A. from Oxford University in 1929. He served in the Royal Air Force from 1942 to 1945 as a flying officer and was a näytä lisää prisoner of war in Java and Japan. Fletcher's lengthy career in government and civil service included stints as deputy controller of the Foreign Exchange Control in Singapore, district officer of the Cameron Highlands, and colonial adviser to the United Kingdom delegation to the General Assembly of the United Nations. He undertook various missions to Nigeria, Kenya, and New Hebrides for the United Kingdom and was also the chairman of various civil service selection boards. His written work includes the autobiography The Emperor's Guest and Allen & Unwin. He has contributed articles, stories, and reviews to periodicals in England, the United States, Canada, and Germany.
