Hannah Smart is an average middle-class girl who loves her parents, her best friend, and especially her pop idol, Josh Taylor. But her formerly awesome world is about to blow up. Her parents won't buy her a ticket to see Josh Taylor's concert debut — in fact, they're planning to move the family to an entirely new city.

This book reminded me of an after-school television special, with a sweet, stalwart heroine whose problems seem insurmountable but after some trial and error are tidily resolved. There isn't much substance or development here, but the book and its projected sequels are built to communicate valuable lessons about character, personal integrity, relationships, and getting along with others. Girls who enjoy Sarah Mlynowski's Whatever After series should like bright, chipper Hannah Smart. Readers whose families are not white, middle-class, and traditional will not see themselves reflected in Hannah's world, however.
