The gospel of Mark is blunt and forceful, fast-paced and relentless in its presentation of Jesus as the promised Messiah. Just as John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus (1:3-4), Jesus must in turn make way for the coming kingdom: The land and people are ipoverished, diseased, and overrun with demons.
