Meet up with the Octavia Books Book Club to discuss The Circle by Dave Eggers on Saturday, October 18, 10:30 A.M. A New York Times bestseller and Notable Book of 2013, and one of the most highly-acclaimed books of the year, The Circle is the wild, terrifying story of a young tech employee’s descent into a digital apocalypse that bears close resemblance to our own present—a prescient and far-seeing warning from one of the most important writers of our time.
When Mae Holland is hired to work for The Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime—even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at The Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one woman’s ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge.

Oakland - The Diesel Readers discuss "The Circle" Diesel, A Bookstore in Oakland welcomes The Diesel Readers back to the store to discuss The Circle by Dave Eggers on Monday, August 25th at 7pm.When Mae Holland is hired to work for The Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company headquartered on a sprawling California campus, she rightly feels she's been given the opportunity of a lifetime. As she tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the company's modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night; there are famous musicians playing on the lawn; there are athletic activities, clubs, and brunches; there is even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO. Mae can't believe her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the world, even as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at The Circle becomes increasingly public.
This event is free and all are welcome and encouraged to attend!
