This author obviously has a talent for horror. His idea is good. I know how hard writers work on their books and I dislike being overly critical. This book did not appeal to me, possibly it would appeal to the 20 something age group. It needs to be tightened up a bit. Things I didn't like were overuse of the word "just"-sometimes twice in a sentence, tenses sometimes changed within a sentence or short paragraph, and the use of the word "anyways". It's not for oldies. However, if you like horror and you are younger and trendier than I am, you may enjoy this.… (lisätietoja)

I really tried to finish True Darkness: Awakening. I really did. Unfortunately, the volume of typos rendered it unreadable. I could not even finish chapter 1. Darren Dyskord and Ravenswood Publishing should be ashamed and either fire their current editor or hire one.
Had the lack of editing been the only problem, I could have made more progress. Unfortunately, it wasn't. The only thing I can compare this book to are the self-indulgent drivel my ex-brother-in-law used to call his poetry at the height of his pubescent, Marylin Manson fueled years of angst. Reading either was a chore.
The characters were flat, most of the story I could make myself read was told in an unfocused, flat narrative where it seemed the author was experimenting in combinations of words that should be terrifying. The content of this unending narrative seemed to solely consist of regurgitation of the kind of uninformed (and now de-bunked) alarmist Satanic crap the local sheriff used to talk about when I was in junior high with a smattering of foul words.
If you want to read GOOD gothic horror, forgo True Darkness: Awakening and order a copy of Clive Barker's Sacrament or Galilee or Imagica. Or call my mother. She's far more terrifying that anything I forced myself to read in this book, and she understands the difference between possessive nouns and plural nouns.
