J.C. Durkin was born in Athy, Ireland in 1929. He joined the British Army in 1948, serving with the 1st Lancashire Fusiliers. He transferred to D Squadron of the Malayan Scouts (SAS) in 1951 and was sent to Malaya to fight the communist insurgency.
