Nick is called to New Orleans after hurricane Katrina hits as part of the DMORT team to recover bodies from the storm. Working with FEMA, DEA, & the National Guard the mantra of 1st the dead is changed to 1st the living. Not used to recovering people alive, Nick has a hard time dealing with survivors. Along the way, he comes across a dead body that forensically was killed before the hurricane hit & the storm is being used to cover up more murders. Being told not to investigate & leave the dead bodies, Nick still continues his quest to link the murders & is stopped at every avenue, shot at, & followed by DEA, NOPD, & his psychiatrist. The series finale? Nick is getting married! The loner entomologist finally asked Alena to marry him; and with four days to go before the wedding he takes off out of town for his monthly club meeting with other forensic specialists. At the meeting his close friend never shows up who requested him to be there. Nick goes to locate him & finds blowflies swarming in the window at his house and the smell of a dead body. Clashing with the police detective, Nick pursues the investigation into his friend's death that puts him in the cross hairs of a former FBI agent, an old case, and puzzling question on why he isn't heading home for his wedding. Nick is requested to a murder scene on a farm to figure time of death. Puzzled as to why he is asked, he arrives and is shocked to find that the wife of the victim is an old friend. Investigating the time of death leads to more questions due to bugs that aren't belonging to the region. Nick asks his friend Alena (dog lady from previous book) to assist with her tracking dogs. What starts out as a simple murder takes on international problems. Pot, corn, tomatoes, the FBI, The FDA, & the Dept of Agriculture all get pulled in along with foreign players to stop or start a global epidemic in the making. Along with the hybrid bugs, Nick is pulled between his old friend and Alena, who are competing for his affections which he doesn't have a clue about at all.
