Another story of a parent realizing that they need to pay closer attention to their children. This and The Painter have underlying similarities.

(easy, picture, fiction) Tommy and his father share an unique imaginative adventure game where they communicate via outer space. Tommy is fixated on astronauts and space travel. When there is a space shuttle launch coming up, he and his dad plan some special imaginative "us" time, and Tommy anxiously awaits his dad's return to work. Tommy's dad must've had a bad day at work because he seems to have forgotten all about his son and their plans. His dad is angry and frustrated which in turn makes Tommy the same way. He draws space pictures of himself all over the front page of Dad's paper and when Dad discovers it, Tommy fears the worst. It appears, however to be just the wake up call that Dad needed. I wasn't really thrilled with this story though I am pleased with the ending thus why I ended up giving it four stars instead of three. I found the illustrations to be disconcerting in their compositions and color choices. In addition, I was personally apalled when the father first came home and snaps at Tommy. When Tommy is running to hide after the newspaper discovery, I found myself wondering, "where is the author going with this? Is it child abuse?" Much to my relief, it had a positive ending and a lesson, but one I think more for adults than the kids. Basically, remember when you get home from a hard day's work , that may have not been the best day, you may have a little one who has anxiously been waiting just to hear your voice or see your face again. That is the true treasure and joy. I guess if it's kids that learn the lesson here and not the adult? Even if mommy or daddy snap when they get home from work, they have just had a bad day? Give them time to wind down and have a drink or two? As I said, I really didn't like the dark angle of the book when the father first comes home from work.… (lisätietoja)
