This book was recomended to me more than once. If you like the 1960s American scene, this book is packed with an insiders view from a well written author. Something about her style of writing is captivating. Below is a synopsis of the topics she covers:
Bishop James Pike.
Waterworks
The new governor's house
The Getty museum
Traffic control 16.2 mile route east - west
Jaycees wanting to improve lives, worried about the student protests
Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, he put “secular saints” in the stained-glass windows: Albert Einstein, John Glenn, Thurgood Marshall, Paul Tillich, Martin Buber and others
Brother Theobold (Robert J) messages from God, Biker movies, and individuals in the 'invisible city'.
Feminism Margaret Fuller versus Shulamith Firestone, amongst others, pointing out the movement leans too much on what is wrong rather than striving towards having fun.
Dorris lessing
Georgia O'Keeffe, stubborn attitude against conformity in art
Didion in Honolulu, her three year old 'in frangipani lei', National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, James jones
Economics of Hollywood studios
Didion's own migraines, serotonin LSD
Didion's book tour in Hartford with Barnes and Noble
Shopping centres
Didion's time in Colombia (Bogotá)
University of Berkeley 1953 "we were the last generation to identify with adults"
In Malibu, wildflowers, lifeguards, greenhouse nurseries, orchids, and wildfires.

Didion is so successfully unsentimental. A sharp observer of humans and culture, precise and terrifying in her insight. Play it as it Lays is a book in the mind of a depressed, listless woman aimlessly floating in what Didion observes as the Californian decadence of the 60s, though the book never gives any such clear cut terms as clues. It's a bored but functioning nihilistic crowd that thinks it's seen everything and has money and nothing else to do. It's striking how she captures what it's like to live without meaning, maybe due to too much freedom of choice. It also feels like a lot of her personal fears jump out of the pages. A very dark, pessimistic mind without hope, so perfectly captured. But which still often feels the melancholia of being barely alive. "I know what nothing means, and I keep on playing." The tiny 1.5 to 2 page chapters' format makes it irresistible and hard to put down.… (lisätietoja)

This book is great because of the matter of fact and sometimes visceral description of losing someone so close to you and grieving but otherwise it was pretty boring and I just didn't feel any connection to the character which might be somehow due to a distance caused by the grief of the writer but it still made it less impactful.
[minor spoilers in this paragraph, not that the book is the kind that you can spoil]
An example is that there is a scene where the daughter of the writer is being transferred from hospital to hospital and after a few pages of the writer mostly reminiscing about the past, they talk about two sentences. But all the time I just supposed the daughter was unconscious, sleeping, or in a coma. That's how disconnected you (and/or the author) are from the characters.
[end of minor spoilers]
And even if the books aim is to show you disconnect, it still means that I don't care about what I'm reading and that's a problem for me. If the book wasn't so short, I would have stopped reading it at the halfway point, checking out some of the last pages to see if anything else is going on. [spoiler again, no there wasn't anything new]
So the first 30 pages have a real impact, putting you face to face the possibility of death, but then it's mostly just reminiscing about random things from the past.
It also didn't help me to give a crap about the characters is their life is so perfectly boring and maybe not the best word but... privilieged. Where to buy a house, where to go on a vacation, when to go swimming in the ocean, how much time to spend on Hawaii. These are the kinds of things that happen to them. I never felt that I'm interested in reading other books by this author or her husband at any point even though there are plenty of references throughout the book.

I'd recommend Victor E. Frankl's Man's Search For Meaning over this book. It's just way more interesting how a psychiatrist in a death camp faces the closeness of death than some rich and boring american journalist/writer.
But again the first 30-40 pages have some gutwrenching realities that maybe everyone should face in the form of a book before they have to face it in reality.
