Lyhyt elämäkerta
From the publisher: MONICA DICKENS, born in 1915, was brought up in London. Her mother's German origins and her Catholicism gave her the detached eye of an outsider; at St Paul's Girls' School she was under occupied and rebellious. After drama school she was a debutante before working as a cook. One Pair of Hands (1937), her first book, described life in the kitchens of Kensington. It was the first of a group of semi autobiographies of which Mariana (1940), technically a novel, was one. 'My aim is to entertain rather than instruct,' she wrote. 'I want readers to recognise life in my books.' In 1951 Monica Dickens married a US naval officer, Roy Stratton, moved to America and adopted two daughters. An extremely popular writer, she involved herself in, and wrote about, good causes such as the Samaritans. After her husband died she lived in a cottage in rural Berkshire, dying there in 1992.

Story about a widow and her three daughters, Name that Book (kesäkuu 2013)

I have mixed feelings about this novel. The prose was beautiful, the characters were beautiful. I didn't quite understand why it's categorized primarily as a romance novel, it's more a bildungsroman, but the beginning and end of the novel make it seem like it wants to be a romance novel. You go into the story not knowing who Mary's husband is, which would have been a great setup for a "who-is-she-going-to-choose?" situation.

We spent way too long following Mary's romance with Denys, way too long with Pierre, and not enough time with Sam. It felt as though I didn't really know Sam enough to care about his character, I only knew I was supposed to care about him, even though I didn't. Overall, I think I would give this a 3.5/5 stars.… (lisätietoja)

Orphaned by the Great Plague just the year before, a boy manages to finally pull his life together in London in 1666. He has a job ferrying passengers and piloting other people's boats through the treacherous passage under the London Bridge. He has a caring friend and a new place to stay. But now he must face the possibility it might all go up in smoke.

A decent enough bit of juvenile historical fiction, but I never cared about the characters and the ending seemed abrupt and too pat.

In the early part of World War II, Mary hears on the news that her husband's ship has gone down, with some casualties. Her phone line is down, and she has no way of getting news of him till morning, so she goes to bed and finds safety in thinking about something else... anything else. She begins to relive memories of her entire life... her childhood with her mother and uncle Geoffrey who is an actor, her idyllic days at her grandparents' home in the country, her first crush, her foray into dramatic school, her sojourn in France where she is swept off her feet by Pierre, and finally the moment when the puzzle pieces fall into place and she meets her future husband.
I had a little trouble with this book at the beginning because there was too much description and not enough dialogue for me, but that improved. But then I wasn't sure how much I liked it because, until near the end, Mary felt rather distant as a character. Towards the end, though, I really did like it quite a bit. I suspect it's just a matter of personal taste for the narration style.

I dont remember much about this book except that I liked it as a child.Might have to do something with the children (the maincharacters) deciding to live by themselves at an old farm after their parent(s) either dies or has to travel.
