What is the model to build the world anew after a global catastrophe? The Deltium answers that question in a creative way. Author DeFabio introduces a lot of profound thinking into how to rebuild society after a total collapse – a sort of anti-Singularity occurs in the near future.

The protagonist of the story is Joshua, a member of The Deltium, a covert group with a purpose: “Our mission was absolutely singular in purpose – to prepare humanity for a quantum leap forward that is absolutely unparalleled in History.” Joshua teaches a class to the survivors on how to rebuild society in the Deltium’s mold. The class learns about social science, new technology, religion, and government. The archetype for rebuilding the world reminds me of Issac Asimov’s style science fiction, with a healthy dose of sociology that is strongly influenced by the work of University of Pennsylvania social scientist Richard Estes, along with a chunk of Robert Heinlein for good measure.

Unfortunately for the survivors, another group decides to attack. Luckily, Jason has finished his teaching and his star pupils are able to assume the reins of leadership. The rest is history – and a sequel which I will look forward to.

I must say that this book truly made me think about world government, global citizenship, technology, and religion in a way that few other books have. For that reason, I would recommend The Deltium. One the other hand, it is neither fully formed nor a well polished work. I also spent some time to research the concepts in the books on my own; I would have enjoyed an appendix or website that gave some pointers to some of the sources of the author’s ideas.
