I first encountered this book at a friends house who had picked it up years ago, at a gun show of all places, for a few bucks. I thought it was the coolest. That began my year long search for my own copy. One popped up on Amazon for 300 dollars. That was too expensive. Then recently two popped up on Amazon, 1 for 95 and 1 for 115. I made the plunge and bought one. I am glad I did.
The book is basically an illustrated guide to European helmets from the Dark Ages through the Renaissance. I did not count, but I believe there are upward of 100 helmets within. Each helmet gets it's own page and captioning stating the relevant facts about it. I own a few books on armour and armour collections and have seen many, many helmets but I probably had not seen 70% of the ones in this book.
Some of the photographs are of poor quality (the book was put together back in the mid 70s) and only a handful are in color. But some helmets do get different views to lend the reader a better picture of the complete piece.
This book is an excellent piece for the collector or enthusiast. It illustrates helmets from collections all over the world, both public and private. It was definitely worth the money to me.… (lisätietoja)
