Caribou King, fine arts dealer in Coho Bay, Alaska, and the town's only licensed realtor, has closed up her gallery for the winter, and stops by the Tilamu house to check on it after the departure of the summer tenant, Mrs. Nash.
Instead, she finds Mrs. Nash's dead body.
Old Doc Tilamu had been the town's only doctor until he died, and his thre e children had all left town for the lower 48 as soon as they were able. When Alex Tilamu shows up at Mrs. Nash's funeral, drunk and ranting about murder of his parents, it causes quite a stir.
Thus begins a disturbing post-season season, looking for a killer, and a possible motive for the murder.
The entire Coho Bay police force is one man, Dan Simmons, and he's very interested in Cara King. So is another neighbor, Frank.
Cara is juggling two men, a murder mystery, and competing claims of ownership to the Tilamu house.
It's an engaging town, and an engaging story. I have to confess that I don't like Frank, which is apparently not the intended effect. Cara's mother is more than a bit managing, which is all too familiar to me, but she also has many good points.
All in all, enjoyable. I look forward to getting to know this town better in future entries in the series.

Romance takes first place in this cozy mystery. There is a dead body, and at first it seems to be a suicide but proves to be murder. However, the majority of the book focuses on a romantic triangle and on the behavior of the main character's mother. So if what you are looking for is a romance, you win big time, but if you are looking for a good mystery it's up for grabs.
I win either way because my copy is audio by Michelle Babb who makes all of the characters more real and interesting!

The characters are interesting, the investigation sounds good, most of the plot is not only a grabber but quite well done. But I have two problems: the mob style disposition of the body and the ending. I don't want to get into the spoiler thing, so I'll just leave it at that and you can judge for yourself.
On the other hand, Michelle Babb is great as narrator with her instinctive pacing and intensity, as well as having a voice that is not only pleasant to the ear but defines characters and situations.… (lisätietoja)

Why is she back?
Given the lack of local ties other than Cara, and the hostility of Jack, her former father-in-law, it seems a bit strange.
Meanwhile, Cara's sister, Mel, and brother-in-law, Bent, are running their restaurant for the summer visitors, and making preparations for the birth of their baby. The elder Kings are doing their wildlife research, in and out of town as time allows, and hatching plans to be around for their grandchild's birth.
Jack insist's his son's death wasn't an accident, and accuses Taylor, but it's not not even clear how Taylor could be responsible for the bear attack. Handsome local boat tour guide Frank seems to be pursuing Cara, then winds up spending a night with Taylor.
When a headless and handless body is found in the bay, and neither Frank nor Jack can be found, Cara doesn't know what to think, or do. The local constable may also have questionable motives, and it's hard to know who to trust. Beyond her immediate family, the answer might be "no one," and Cara doesn't even know how to live that way.
These are interesting characters with a real problem on their hands. This is the start of a series, so some of it is scene-setting and getting acquainted with ongoing characters, but it's a good, solid story with good characters.
