Capsule review: Do NOT make this your first book about gender issues as they apply to transpeople.
In more depth: This book is old. I'm sure that its basic message (listen to the subjects) was very helpful in initiating some of the changes that have occurred in transgendered treatment protocols. However, it makes for very bad reading now.
Much of the book is a literature review with a critique. While it's nice that he collected all this data, his presentation is terrible. The books aren't introduced well. Based on what he said about books I'd actual read, I have to assume that he missed major parts of writers' arguments and chose only to argue with points that he disagreed with.
In addition, he gives no quarter to the historical context of a book or the predominant theories of gender and sexuality that prevailed at the time of its writing. If a book doesn't speak his language, it is wrong.
Finally, the author completely misunderstands how performativity informs current (at his writing) post-modern theories of gender. I think that post-modernism is limited in understanding gender, but you have to understand it to be able to critique it properly.Cromwell merely comes off as partisan and badly informed. Considering that many of his own arguments rely on post-modernism at their core, he is standing on very shaky ground.… (lisätietoja)

Librarian's Review: I didn’t like this book. It’s very theoretical, and has nothing to do with my life at all. If you like reading academia, then Cromwell probably has a valuable perspective as an academic who is also trans. But even as academia, we have better books in the library.
