Wow, also das Buch macht mich jetzt nun doch irgendwie fertig. Aber ich fange von vorn an:
Allein vom Cover und Titel hat man eigentlich schon eine ziemlich genaue Vorstellung von dem Buch, jedenfalls ging es mir so. Der Klappentext passend zum Genre unterstützt das eigentlich auch noch so ziemlich. Ich will gar nicht behaupten, dass der Klappentext nicht passen würde, denn das tut er, ich habe zum ziemlich großen Teil bekommen, was ich erwartet habe, andererseits war es aber auch völlig anders.

Erstmal ist der Schreibstil toll, das Buch liest sich sehr flüssig, schnell und wirklich angenehm. Außerdem macht es einfach Spaß. Zwischendurch gab es Dinge über die ich sehr lachen musste und größtenteils ist die Protagonistin eigentlich auch sympathisch, auch wenn ich mir manches Mal gewünscht hätte, dass sie ihrem Ex-Freund mehr Kontra gibt, der übrigens ein echter Kotzbrocken ist. Es gab zwar auch einige Szenen, wo ich über Natalie echt nur den Kopf schütteln konnte, aber auch das ist für solche Bücher nicht ungewöhnlich. Trotzdem hat mir die Geschichte sehr gut gefallen und mich so gut unterhalten, dass ich sie in einem Tag direkt bis zum Ende durchgezogen habe. So weit, so gängig.

Und dann kam das Ende. Das Geheimnis wurde gelüftet, man hatte eh schon wilde Fantasien, was es sein könnte und meine Gedanken gingen auch in eine ähnliche Richtung, trotzdem hat es mich doch Überrascht. Nur ab da wurde das Buch dann irgendwie total abgedreht. Was nebenbei bemerkt nicht schlecht ist, es gibt da nur so eine kleine Grenze ab der es zu viel wird.
Als es anfing verrückt zu werden, war es auch noch völlig akzeptabel, es war noch nachvollziehbar. Aber selbst das steigerte die Autorin noch, dass es mir dann doch irgendwann etwas absurd vorkam. Es war für mich persönlich am Ende einfach ein klein wenig zu viel. Zu übertrieben. Zu abgedreht. Es war nicht schlecht, und es war definitiv spannend und hat auch irgendwo funktioniert. Aber gerade diese aller letzte überrumpelnde Sache, die war für mich so das kleine Bisschen, das es über die Grenze zum Übertriebenen geschossen hat.

Wie gesagt, das Buch hat mir so ansonsten sehr gut gefallen und ich hatte viel Spaß beim Lesen - außerdem war es mal eine angenehme Überraschung, dass die Protagonisten nicht dauernd im Bett landen, das passiert hier exakt ein einziges Mal. Und das funktioniert, denn der Zeitpunkt dafür ist gut gewählt. Trotzdem hat es diesen Hauch des abgedrehten, der es aber gleichzeitig aus dem Klischee des Genres komplett rausholt. Außerdem mag ich Jake als Charakter, vor allem weil er mal nicht vollständig dem Schönheitsideal dieser Bücher entspricht und gleichzeitig gezeigt wird, dass Behinderungen oder äußerliche "Makel" eine Beziehung nicht ausschließen, dass man dadurch eben nicht weniger schön ist als andere. Vor allem auch weil Jake nicht damit hadert. In anderen Büchern wird das ganze dann gern auf die dramatisch-tragische Spur gezogen, wo die Charaktere mit sich selbst nicht zurecht kommen und unbedingt der Partner kommen muss, der sie da rausholt und "rettet". I decided to read this to find out if Libby ever improved as a character. Sadly, in my opinion, she was just as terrible as she was in The Ugly Duckling. I was hoping for a story about their struggle with infertility and how they overcome it, but we don't get that at all. While I understand the thought behind the storyline of Will being a workaholic and taking on a case in his law firm that Libby didn't like, I just really really didn't like how she handled it. If she had just been open with Will from the beginning and tried to look at Will from where he was sitting....... That being said, workaholic or not, I still liked the character of Will and I still don't understand why he is with Libby. Maybe others will like this book and that's ok. It's just a big no from me 2.5 stars and the .5 is for Will.… (lisätietoja)

The Ugly Duckling is about a 29 year old woman named Libby who was made fun of in high school for being "fat". She goes on to lose a lot of weight and re-make herself into her idea of beautiful and manages to get the attention of plenty of shallow guys, but no keepers. At almost 30 years old she is still stuck on the past and her low image of herself. She starts dating a player named Jude whose friend and roomate is in a wheelchair. Will is a hard worker, good looking, and sweet on Libby even though she is dating Jude. Who will she end up with?

I really loved the idea of this book because I love stories about people who grow into their own and put a terrible high school experience behind them, but I really disliked Libby throughout the entire book. While I get having insecurities about body image and bad memories of high school days, Libby was just over the top. Her only redeeming quality to me was that she loved animals. She knew better, but kept on making silly choices. She didn't think of anyone but herself. My favorite part of the book was when Will hollers at her to get over herself and high school and grow up (not in those exact words, but that was the gist of it). Hallelujah! But did she listen? No! I really liked Will's character and just couldn't understand what he saw in Libby. I really felt that her character could have been written so much better and less self absorbed.

My initial thought was to rate this about a 2 or 2.5, but I went with a 3 mainly because of Will. I have enjoyed other books by Costa and will read others, but this one was just not a favorite and I'm sad about that, because it could have been.… (lisätietoja)
