Charles Washington Coleman was born in Richmond, Va. 22 November 1862 and died 29 April 1932 (24 April according to some accounts). He served as librarian at the College of William and Mary 1893-1898. There he befriended the young James Branch Cabell, who roomed with Coleman's mother. He is supposed to be, in part, the model for Cabell's character John Charteris. Subsequently, he was associated with the Library of Congress.

Charles Washington Coleman (1862-1932)
Born Richmond, Va., 1862. Studied law at University of Virginia, and while there contributed verse to the University Magazine and other periodicals. His poems are to be found in the files of Harper's Magazine, The Century, and the Atlantic Monthly, between the years 1885 and 1898, by which time most of his poetry had been written; others were printed in the Independent, Harper's Bazaar, etc. He also has written several prose articles of note, including 'The Recent Movement in Southern Literature,' published in Harper's Magazine, May, 1887.
