- T.R.R. Cobb, the younger brother and supporter of Georgia politician Howell Cobb, and son-in-law of Georgia's top judge, was a prominent lawyer, legal scholar, and proponent of female education. A pro-slavery Unionist, he was best known for his 1858 book on slavery-related case law, which included a long historical sketch portraying slavery as a beneficial institution. Cobb became a secessionist after Abraham Lincoln's election in 1860 and was elected to the Confederate Congress. Within months he withdrew from politics and formed a Confederate regiment. Promoted to brigadier in October 1862, he was killed two months later at the Battle of Fredericksburg.
