Little slow-moving. First 20% sort of felt like it was repeating the same things over and over: people accused of things they didn't do suffering greatly in jail and she wants to do something about it. I liked the bits about herbalism and some of the history, but mostly this book didn't quite end up being what I'd hoped it would be for me. Had potential, but just did not hold my interest. Disappointed.
I really wanted to like this - the book is based on its eponymous heroine, the real-life Elizabeth Cellier who had, as the understatement of the century, an extraordinary life during an extraordinary time in history. And while the author does a commendable job capturing the stench & squalor of Newgate prison, and creating a palpable sense of the times, the book just dragged on and on. The level of repetition was overhwleming, I finally aborted at the 40% point. This book was well-received, so I´m sure there will be others who will disagree with me, but this book was wanting of a good editor.… (lisätietoja)
