In celebration of National Poetry Month we celebrate the genre and gender bending work of poet Anne Carson with this lecture by Dr. Britta Spann of Georgia Tech. Together we will explore how Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse equates literary genre with gender: its hybridization of traditionally gendered forms-the epic and the romance-is replicated in Geryon, the work’s gender non-conforming protagonist.We will learn more about how Carson’s non genre conforming book about a non-gender conforming hero ultimately works toward “unshelving” both categories, exposing them as mere strictures that limit possibility. This is a Charis Circle From Margin to Center Literary Event. The suggested donation is $5.
