Trigger warnings: torture, military violence, imprisonment

6/10, looking back at this I actually enjoyed it though I'll doubt that I'll pick this one up again now seeing all the glaring flaws that it has however I didn't notice them at first when I picked this up and thought it as just another good fantasy read, where do I begin. It starts with the main character Lowell living his normal life in the land of Oster when suddenly he comes across an unconscious person lying on the riverbank and for one reason or another he brings her back to health. Her name was Lycaea and she and Lowell turned out to be wolf shifters and apparently a person named Daeman Leldh wants them hunted down maybe due to his hatred of that ethnicity, I don't really know. In the middle Lowell and Lycaea don't do that much other than explore the main city with lots of markets and prisons and other buildings yet somehow I couldn't really connect to either character since they weren't developed or fleshed out enough; that irritated me a little bit. Towards the end of the book the action finally picks up when Lowell was sent to prison probably by Daeman and his accomplices/allies but Lycaea helps him escape and take him down though I do feel that it's a little bit rushed since it only spanned like 50 pages or something like that and could've been more thought out; at least it wrapped up the book on a high note.… (lisätietoja)

"Slipping the Noose" was as good as "Devil's Ballast", if not slightly better, although I was disappointed with the ending. The reason I haven't given Slipping the Noose a higher rating was that the novel needed better editing as it was spoilt by modernisms which grated on my nerves considering it was a historical setting.

However, I liked that the novel was narrated by both Read and Bonny, and there was certainly lots of action, danger and mayhem. Overall, an entertaining read.

Even though I enjoyed "Devil's Ballast", I didn't love it. I liked Bonny's character; she was feisty and tough, and the fact she was a female pirate made her even more interesting. However, I didn't find the romance between her and Calico believable but the friendship between her and Read was a highlight. In fact, it was my favourite part of the whole story. Overall, a fun read.

I counted fifteen dead men working the deck of the Kingston.

Well, they weren’t dead yet, but the day was young and I had a full belt of shot.

As is just made obvious, this book had great narration, whip-fast and stuffed with the strangest high-seas jargon. So I read it pretty fast, but around the middle it kind of left me in the dust - it's definitely a "it's not you it's me" problem, so I don't want to speak too strongly. It only felt a little paint-by-numbers after a point. While strongly-plotted, it wasn't the most interesting of plots, I guess?

But still an interesting interpretation and examination of Anne Bonny's life that clearly has its audience elsewhere, just not with me.
