I devoured this book! I have been looking forward to this book since I finished the last installment so I was eager to get my hands on it. I went into this book with extremely high expectations and am happy to report that it did not disappoint. I loved that we get to see both Mercy’s and some of Adam’s points of view in this book.

One of the things that I love about reading a longer-running series like this one is spending time with familiar characters that almost feel like family. I feel like I have been through a lot with Mercy, Adam, and the rest of the gang. In this installment, Adam and Mercy must navigate a new environment as they work to get to the bottom of what is happening. Mercy is still dealing with the effects of the events in the last installment and I felt really bad for both her and Adam. Even with Mercy not quite at her peak, these two are a formidable pair and I had a feeling that they would figure things out.

I listened to the audiobook and thought that Lorelei King did a phenomenal job with the narration. She does such a good job of bringing this cast of characters to life. I read a copy of this book as soon as I could get my hands on it but didn’t hesitate to pick up a copy of the audiobook for a quick re-read because I knew that this narrator would be able to take the story to the next level. She adds just the right of emotion to her reading and uses very distinctive voices for each of the key characters. I do believe that her performance added to my enjoyment of this story.

I would highly recommend this book to others. This is a series that I would recommend reading in order since the character relationships that are so important to the story have grown and changed throughout the series. I had such a great time with this novel and hope to spend more time with Mercy and Adam very soon.

I received a review copy of this book from Ace and Penguin Random House Audio.

Content warnings:
This book contains scenes of blood, violence, gun violence, gore, dismemberment (off page), death (including the death of a child), transphobia, misgendering, phone harassment, obsession, mind control, sexual harassment, spiders, and a car accident (minor injuries, no deaths).

The day I don’t enjoy a Mercy Thompson book is going to be a very sad day indeed, and once again I thoroughly enjoyed this latest novel by Patricia Briggs. Winter Lost comes after the very dark Soul Taken, and all the characters are reeling from the events of that book. While Mercy, Adam, the Pack and their allies triumphed, and the Soul Taker was destroyed, Mercy was left with gaping wounds in her magic and soul. While she’s trying to deal with them in her own way, aka stubbornly hoping it will fix itself, she’s terrified that the situation is permanent and what that now means for her.

Meanwhile, Bonarata, the most powerful vampire in the world who kidnapped Mercy in Silence Fallen, is continuing his obsession. Already on edge, Mercy is forced to endure harassing phone calls and hanging up on Bonarata has deadly consequences. With the threat of him lurking and Mercy not at her best, the last thing Mercy and Adam need is her brother Gary turning up at their door, unable to communicate.

All paths lead to Montana, where Gary was last working on a ranch. Mercy and Adam head to the ranch to see what they can find, a massive storm hits, cutting them off from everyone and everything. They find themselves at a lodge with a group of strangers, and soon realise there’s more going on than they realised.

While Winter Lost connects to everything that has happened in previous books, what I liked about this one was it took a step back and gave Mercy and Adam some breathing space instead of piling on another huge Tri-Cities crisis. That’s not to say the stakes in Winter Lost aren’t big – they are! – but they’re focused on something specific rather than it being a continuation of the ongoing scenarios.

In this book, Briggs also introduces ‘interludes’ between Mercy and Adam’s chapters, and these are short scenes that include other characters and tell the reader about events that take place outside the current events and timeline. Some happen before the book’s events start or before a particular scene, while others show what is happening to The Pack while Mercy and Adam are in Montana.

In the last few books, the dynamics of the Pack have been changing, especially since Sherwood’s identity and memory were restored. In Winter Lost, Adam leaves some of the dominant wolves in charge, letting them work things out for themselves while also ensuring there’s a third wolf to act as a tie-break vote if needed. One of the interludes shows us how some of the characters got on without Adam, and it was a brilliant scene.

A lot is happening in this book, and Briggs’ fantastic world-building shines through as she weaves myth and urban fantasy together. There’s a great mixture of humour, quirky characters and witty dialogue as always, that balances the difficult hard-hitting topics. I’ve seen some readers complain about the way Briggs has been depicting Mercy in the most recent books, particularly her vulnerability, and how Mercy is trying to be more open with Adam. I’m all for it.

Relationships are hard work, especially long-term relationships, and you don’t just hit a certain milestone and go aha that’s X amount of years, we can communicate perfectly now! People change constantly, and in a world like Mercy and Adam’s with magic and Pack bonds, it’s even more complicated. It makes a lot of sense that at this stage in the series, and in their relationship, this is where Briggs is heading.

I mentioned that the stakes were big in Winter Lost, albeit differently, and I liked the way that Briggs played around with myth and belief. It was very much a case of ‘well this could happen and no one wants to find out if it’s true or not!’, rather than complicating things and saying for certain that it would happen. That was my read on it anyway, I’m sure each reader will have their own.

Briggs has never been one to shy away from representation, with one of her main characters being gay, and the issues other male werewolves have with that character discussed in previous books. In this one, it was great to see her feature a transgender character working for Adam, and there was also an inner dialogue about a character possibly being neurodivergent. While the character isn’t neurodivergent, I very rarely see authors have their characters acknowledge the possibility. Instead, it’s comments about being “slow” or “weird” which is what another character says, and this inner dialogue was used to correct that, which was extremely appreciated!

I enjoyed Winter Lost a lot, and there were many new characters that I hope we see again. I also hope that Briggs includes interludes in each book from now on, as they were very interesting and often hilarious.

Another Mercy story, delving back in to the world of wolf pack business and where she belongs in the hierarchy. On top of that she has fae chasing after her trying to find a copy of a book she was given.
Admittedly it has been quite a while since I have read any of the series and a refresher probably would have helped. I remembered the key players, but the smaller parts or those stories that happened in previous books we no longer in my mind. It was an enjoyable story all around. I would have liked to have a bit more detail. The final battle was rather lack luster and I feel they could have done a lot more with it.
Quick read. Happy Ending. What more could you want?

First Impressions
Blood Bound is the second book in the "Mercy Thompson" series and I have been reading this whole world in order alongside with the "Alpha and Omega" series with it which has definitely had more positives than negatives. I really found it interesting but it did have less romance in it than even the first book did. I didn't really understand Sam living with her when she hasn't truly decided on what is happening with Adam, but hopefully that will all get figured out in Iron Kissed (crossing fingers) I did enjoy the plot with the vampires and the sorcerer and very curious to see how the events that happen in this book will reflect in Iron Kissed.

First Line
Like most people who own their own businesses, I work long hours that start early in the morning.

Summary
This is the story that continues a bit the connection that Mercy has with Adam who has claimed her as her mate but she has yet to accept that claim, and then her childhood friend who once broke her heart, Sam who is a pack doctor. We have a mystery involving a dangerous sorcerer and some vampire politics happening that Mercy is dragged into and caught into a conflict that brings the packs into the fray. But will Mercy be able to defeat a danger that no one else has been able to?

What I Loved
Honestly....the plot of the story was the best part of this book. It kept me on edge and was packed with danger and mystery. And when the villain attacks her in her home....LITERAL CHILLS! It was so so spooky! I can see this one being the perfect read for Halloween or October reading haha

I did enjoy seeing the growth and action that we get from Mercy. You can definitely feel the build up in the relationships that she has with both characters even though there was little attention to it in this book here. I am curious to see how this conflict between the three of them will be resolved in the end though.

What I Struggled With
LACK OF ROMANCE .....it just felt so much lower than the first book so I am craving more heart and feels with her relationships with these two men. I kinda know who she ends up but I was hoping for more happenings between these three that what was reflected in the story and y'all know how much I need a good romance element in my story.

Narration
BRILLIANT! This narrator really brings out the story and especially Mercy so well. I am loving her character quite a bit. Probably one of my more favorite UF heroines, she just is so real and normal haha

Overall View
Blood Bound is an action packed, leaves you with thrills and chills and delivers a well satisfying ending that only gives you a true gem of a read.

Favorite Quote(s)
“We’d spent years as adversaries, two predators sharing territory and a certain, unwelcome attraction. Somehow, during all those years I spent outwardly acquiescing to his demands while making sure I held my own, I’d won his respect. I’d had werewolves love me and hate me, but I’d never had one respect me before. Not even Samuel. Adam respected me enough to act on my suspicions. It meant a lot.”
