So this was a good book, but it is a bit dated. The age doctors begin to truly worry these days seems to have upped to 35 from 30. Also, since I've gotten used to reading journal articles for stuff like this I felt like the approach to citing evidence for their recommendations was a bit lenient for me. Do I think that their plan for a healthy pregnancy later in life works like they say? Probably. The authors are experts, but I really wanted to see more about methodology and statistics because I'm an anxious, academic type of person. I probably shouldn't feel this way because I did follow a similar routine to theirs through my pregnancy at 20. Everything went smoothly then, but my anxiety is not a thing to be reasoned with. I liked that they did go into the meat of what to do much more than some pregnancy books and the anatomic descriptions/drawings gave me a new perspective. I did not feel like I was getting a repeat of every other pregnancy book, a genuine problem that I've seen in a lot of pregnancy guides. I also liked that while they had the main body of the text to teach about pregnancy stuff, they also included quotes from women who had given birth in their 30's and 40's in the margins. Those quotes put faces on the phenomena being taught about and struck the balance between medical instruction and the humanity of the experience. I only wish that they had included a third section that gave the evidence in a more academic format.… (lisätietoja)
