Walter Brandmüller

Eine ausgeglichene, informative Darstellung mehrerer Schlüsselthemen der Kirchengeschichte, unpolemisch und fast gänzlich frei von Apologetik. Überaus lesenswert und auch ohne große Mühe zu lesen; Brandmüller ist nicht nur ein tadelloser Historiker, sondern auch fähig, schöne, schlichte, klare Prosa zu schreiben.

Schade nur, daß auf den wissenschaftlichen Apparat verzichtet wurde. Die dadurch bedingte Unmöglichkeit, etwa Zitate im Originalwortlaut zu finden und nachzulesen oder das Werk als Sprungbrett für weiterführende Recherchen zu verwenden, ist ein bedauerlicher und vermeidbarer Schönheitsfehler an einem ansonsten vorbehaltlos empfehenswerten Buch.

A balanced and informative account of several key themes of Church history, given without polemic and with an almost complete absence of typical apologetic devices. Very much worth reading and very readable -- Brandmüller is both a first-rate historian and an author capable of writing beautiful, simple, clear prose.

The book's only shortcoming is that the publishers chose to omit anything resembling a scholarly apparatus or bibliography, making it impossible to track down quotations or use the book as a springboard for further research.
