BRITISH AUTHOR CHALLENGE NOVEMBER - SPARK & BOYD, 75 Books Challenge for 2015 (joulukuu 2015)

Lysander Rief is an actor taking time in Vienna to sort out his sexual problems. Betrayed after a tempestuous love affair, he gets drawn into the First World War as an intelliegence officer in quest of a traitor. Though the morally ambiguous Rief is not an entirely attractive character, Boyd's sense of time and place and his weaving of a complex pacey and plausible plot makes for a compulsive page-turner. I got a bit lost at the end: I'm obviously not cut out for a career as any kind of intelligence officer. But who cares? I had a very good read.… (lisätietoja)

Cashel Greville Ross's life pretty much covers the 19th century, from his birth in Ireland in 1799, to his death some 83 years later. And what a life. His complicated family circumstances make him a soldier at Waterloo, take him to London, to Italy where he meets the Romantic poets Shelley and Byron, and later, the love of his life, with whom he is destined not to spend his life. His travels, his adventures go on in Europe, America and Africa. He's a writer too, cataloguing his experiences - that's how we know so much about him (nudge, wink. The book is full of playful asides and footnotes). As at Waterloo, and in Italy, Cashel finds himself a footnote in history, so it continues throughout his long life. In some ways a life of achievement, in other ways, a life which laves little behind as his memorial. Tis is the paradox Boyd explores throughout the book, which is a thoroughly involving tale with much to reflect upon in the reading.… (lisätietoja)

You work for an art magazine and in a meeting one day, someone says why don't we have some fiction as all of the writing is non-fiction and the response from Boyd is 'let's invent an artist'. Yes it's fiction but it's in non-fiction form and so will be no different. We have moved here from an unreliable narrator to an unreliable author and that is far more uncomfortable. Anyway, this novella is an imagined biography of an imagined artist which fooled the art world, even down to the point of selling one of the paintings from this artist which had been drawn by Boyd. The art world is full of frauds, this is just one in the written form.

If I hadn't read about the artifice of this book, I would have believed that this artist existed because Boyd has captured the style of writing just so. His inclusion of sources such as journals from other artists as well as his lover's journal but most of all the photographs, provide the authenticity to the book. Boyd says at the end these are photos that he collected from markets. He did insert a character from one of his previous short stories, Logan Mountstuart, but this wasn't picked up on, dare I say because most of us haven't read it. Nor did anyone pick up on the name of the painter and so it became a hoax that would not die. I think what really convinced people that this artist existed was the way that artists of the time were woven into the story. So integral to the ending is Georges Braque, Picasso is in there as well as others from that era. Perhaps it is FOMO when others believed Tate was a real person. Who wants to be considered ignorant about such an important artist and this is what the book plays into in the world of art.

There have been plenty of other books that are imagined biographies or even autobiographies, Biography of X by Catherine Lacey or The Stone Diaries by Carol Shields but what differs with them is that we know they are fictional as we enter them so there is no hoodwinking. So what was the point of Nat Tate?

Well, firstly I suspect, the author's wonder/ego about whether he can pull it off. The answer is yes but Boyd does go on to say that he felt like Frankenstein because as in all of these things, he lost control of the hoax and that is when, I think, hoaxes become dangerous. The ending was ingenious and a perfect way to answer the question of why there is no art left from this person. The second purpose of this book might have been to shine a light on the world of art: how myths and stories around artists are created and how we all buy into them because we want these creatives to be different, to be better, more interesting and, therefore, how easily the world of art can be duped.

I question the motivations for writing a book like this but in truth the boundaries have blurred considerably between fiction and non-fiction nowadays in books and in real life and so this is one more in the library that resides at the lies end of the truth and lies continuum. What is true is that it is very well written.

This is a remarkable and interesting intimate look at a not very lilkeable character, Logan Mountstuart. Mountstuart was born in Uruguay of a South American mother and successful English father At the father's death, mother and son go to England where they are "comfortably taken care of." Logan attends a private boys' school where he becomes friends to two boys: Ben and Peter who remain a part of his life throughout. He attends a college at Oxford, thinking he has successfully passed all this courses; in reality, he barely got by. He marries a woman with a title, has a son, Lionell, and almost immediately is bored and begins to travel for business.

After meeting Freya, he begins an affair which leads to a bitter divorce and almost total estrangement from his son. Soon WWII begins and Logan is drafted into Navel Intelligence. During this time, he comes in company of the Duke of Windsor and Wallis Simpson. He becomes a paratrooper and is captured spending almost two years in a French prison.

After the war, he learns his wife and child have been killed. He travels with connections to his school friends meets various artists including Picasso and writers as Hemingway - to France, Portugal, and Spain. Along the way, he drinks, he smoozes, he has affairs. Eventually he marries again and becomes close to a stepdaughter.

Throughout his life, he is self-absorbed (the only people that seem to have touched him are Freya, the daughter, and the stepdaughter along with ins and outs of Ben and Peter.

The story is not told in narrative form but in the form of diary entries thoughout his long life. At first it took me a while to get into that format, but later found it fascinating - short, funny, in places and brutally crass in others.

I didn't like Logan Mountstuart but he had some redeeming qualities and at times, I felt sorry for him. It seemed a true, honest, and intimate look at the internal feelings of one man without a lot of angst - it just is what it is.

Would definitely read more by this author
