E. R. Boston

The Anglican clergy in Britain have long had a reputation for eccentricity, especially where railways are involved. And in a long roll-call of excellence which includes people like the Rev. W.A. Awdrey and Bishop Eric Treacy, one of the most notable was the Rev. E.A. 'Teddy' Boston. A life-long enthusiast, he came to Cadeby in Leicestershire in the early 1960s and set about building a narrow-gauge railway in the grounds of the rectory (all 285 feet of it). Over the years, he amassed a collection of models, memorabilia and real engines, plus a traction engine or two. He still found time for his duties as a parish priest. I met him once; his knowledge and erudition was great, as was his willingness to share his interests. He died in 1986, but his widow kept his collection and the railway running for another twenty years.
