Each of these novels follows one brother and I enjoyed most of them though they did become repetitive and the brothers' names were mixed up once or twice which was annoying and then there was the fact this collection of stories became somewhat boring as the exact same story was told two or three different ways with different characters but could have been a former book in the series. I enjoyed the first ones in this collection and they were what all interesting but not near to being a favorite collection. The last book was wonderful and by far my favorite.
It is a nice read to take on a five-state, three-day, 20 hourish drive, road trip though.
Rating: 2 and 1/2 stars.
Recommendation: 16/17 up for romance.

Great set of stories!

These were all pretty good books! I enjoyed getting to know all of the characters.
Gretchen finds Jake in her barn. He is a scour for George Washington and her father supports the Hessians. Jake stays with them for awhile and Gretchen is convinced by the freedom offered by the Declaration of Independence and convinces her father too. Jake goes back to scouting and is wounded. Gretchen takes care of him. They decide to get married.
Matilda has to stow away on a whaling ship disguised as a cabin boy. Her father and husband have passed away and she needs money to keep her mother from bring homeless. Tom-a harpooner, takes Matilda under his wing. She struggles with the hard tasks on the ship and Tom helps her a lot. Soon she is drawn to Tom but she must keep her secret. One day she forgets to bind her chest and Tom realizes that she's a woman. He falls in love with her and they get married.
Cecily and her sister Gwen arrive at a new town where Cecily is supposed to meet her soon to be husband. Garrett breaks the bad news to her that Zeke is dead. Cecily doesn't know what she's going to do. Garrett offers to marry her and she agrees. Garrett soon finds that he wants Cecily to truly be his wife but he promised her that he wouldn't push her. Through Garrett's kindness and patience Cecily falls in love with him. They build a new life together.
Evelyn meets Cole as she's trying to save her grandfather's sheep from drowning. Cole is new to town and looking to start a ranch. Evelyn has a reputation in town because she left her fiance at the altar. She's too bust taking care of the sheep to think about love. Cole finds himself falling in love with Evelyn and over time she realizes that she loves him too.
Collette, a widow is hesitant about returning to society. Her sister Julia encourages her to find a suitor. She reconnects with her old crush, Norman. She decides to help out at the orphanage and there she meets Malcolm. Together they teach at the orphanage and Collette starts to develop feelings for Malcolm. Norman pursues her and she feels like Malcolm doesn't reciprocate her love. She resigns herself to marrying Norman but her sister tells her he's only after her fortune. Malcolm finally declares his love and they get married.
Bessie goes to Mackinac Island with her cousins. As she's walking on the dock she slips and Thomas saves her. They instantly feel a spark. Thomas is hesitant to engage in social activities but eager to see Bessie. They share a moonlit dance and then he disappears. Thomas's cousin asks Bessie and him to reenact a wedding for some resort photos. To their surprise the wedding is actually official. They realize that they want it to be real. They convince their parents of their love and marry properly.
Julianna works baking bread at a mining camp. Everyday she has to fight off advances from the miners. One day on the train, the foreman, Lukas promises to keep her safe. Lukas soon develops feelings for Julianna but she is wart of him. He shows up every day to help her load her bread on the train. Soon, she falls in love with him. They plan to start their lives together in a new town.
Trevor's friend convinces him to move to Colorado to escape his high pressure life in New York. Unfortunately, his friend Charlie puts Trevor's name in a newspaper article and Trevor finds himself the subject of unwanted attention. He meets Anna St Clair in a shop that he decides to hide in. In a twist of fate, Anna remembers him from New York. She'd always wanted his attention and gives him a false name so that he won't recognize her. On impulse Trevor asks if he can court her so that he can pretend he's taken to the ladies in town. She agrees wholeheartedly. They soon fall I'm love with each other and reveal their pasts. They agree that their love will stand the test of time.
Miriam fell in love with a German while she was in Germany with her mother. Paul ends up in her town as a prisoner of war. They soon realize that their love for each other has not faded. Unfortunately for Miriam, her father wants her to marry a local farmer, Arthur. Miriam and Paul try to meet but it's difficult. Paul gets a chance to work at Miriams farm. They steal moments together. Her father finally consents to their love after Paul helps him with his broken leg. Paul has to return to Germany and then wait awhile to come back to the states.
