Bennett was born in Armley in Leeds, West Yorkshire. He decided to apply for a scholarship at Oxford University. He was accepted by Exeter College, Oxford from which he graduated with a first-class degree in history. He was born on May 9, 1934; he is an English author, actor, humorist and näytä lisää playwright. Bennett was made an Honorary Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford in 1987. He was also awarded a D.Litt by the University of Leeds in 1990 and an Hon. PhD from Kingston in 1996. In October 2008 Bennett announced that he was donating his entire archive of working papers, unpublished manuscripts, diaries and books to the Bodleian Library free of charge, as a gesture of thanks and repaying a debt he felt he owed to the UK's social welfare system that had given him educational opportunities which his humble family background would otherwise never have afforded. In 2015 his title, Six Poets: Hardy to Larkin: An Anthology by Alan Bennett, made The New Zealand Best Seller List. He also made the list in 2016 with his title The Lady in the Van. From the very first page, where Mrs Donaldson encounters Terry in his tangerine Y-fronts with a mobile phone tucked into the waistband pondering problems in the back passage, I knew I was in for a rollicking read.
Classic Alan Bennett, revealing the quirks and foibles of human nature in his characteristic down-to-earth, dry and drole style.
Who could even begin to imagine what might go on behind closed doors?
Hats off to these two middle-aged ladies for veering off the trodden path of an ordinary, humdrum existence and venturing into unseemly pastures new.… (lisätietoja)

What a quirky little book! A middle-class couple return home from the opera to discover that everything--every single item--has been removed from their apartment, leaving them only with "the clothes they stood up in." But why? Who? And what does it reveal about their marriage??
Despite my innate prejudice against UK royal fawning, this is quite a charming book about the power of books when HRH, the Queen aka Elizabeth Windsor, discovers the pleasures of reading books.
It’s a quick read with some moments of wry humour and a surprise ending.
Books have enriched my life in a way that one could never have expected. But books can only take me so far and now I think it is time that from being a reader I become, or try to become, a writer.

Welch Unerhörtheit aber auch! Die Queen liest! Jeder um sie herum ist empört – angefangen von ihrem Privatsekretär Sir Kevin, dann den Pagen und schließlich den Hofdamen. Die Untertanen müssen nun vor ihren Begegnungen mit der Queen weniger auf Smalltalk denn mehr auf literarische Fragen der Königin vorbereitet werden. Und auch der Premier selbst soll von ihrer neuen Leseleidenschaft angesteckt werden, der den wöchentlichen Treffen deswegen mehr und mehr genervt entgegensieht. Die Familie wiederum reagiert gelassen, weil Ihre Majestät durch das Lesen weicher und nachsichtiger im Umgang geworden ist.
Die Queen aber - ganz „Souverän“ (großgeschrieben!) - lässt sich durch keine Einfälle des Hofes abschrecken (der Bücherbus weg, Norman, ihr literarischer Assistent, zum Studium zwangsversetzt). Sie entwickelt sich in diesem schmalen, nur 115 Seiten umfassenden Band in der Tat von einer unsicheren, unerfahrenen Leserin, die sich ihr erstes Buch nur aus Verlegenheit aus dem Büchereibus ausleiht - zu einer immer souveräner agierenden Kennerin der verschiedenartigsten und zum Teil auch ominös-zwielichtigen Literatur. Von der schlichten Leserin wird sie zur Notizen machenden Leserin und erklärt schließlich vor versammelter Gästeschar anlässlich ihres 80. Geburtstags, dass sie selbst unter die Schriftsteller gehen wird, aber, bei Gott, keine langweilige Autobiografie!… (lisätietoja)
