1851. Edgardo Mortara è il sestogenito di una famiglia ebrea di Bologna, città all'epoca pertinente allo Stato Pontificio. Credendodolo malato e in fin di vita, la domestica cristiana Anna Morisi gli somministra in segreto il battesimo, per paura che alla sua morte vada a finire nel limbo. Il bambino sopravvive, ma sette anni dopo Anna racconta del battesimo a Pier Feletti, capo dell'ufficio bolognese della Santa Inquisizione: il sacramento avrebbe reso il bambino irrevocabilmente cattolico, e poiché le norme dello Stato Pontificio vietano che un cristiano sia cresciuto da non cristiani, Feletti decide di togliere il bambino alla famiglia. Il 24 giugno Edgardo viene quindi prelevato a viva forza e portato a Roma, dove soggiornerà nella Casa dei Catecumeni, il collegio destinato ai figli degli ebrei convertiti. Great cinematography and the can't-take-your-eyes-off-her Detmers make this slow-moving film rather fascinating. She's the fiancee of a man who is being tried for his part in a terrorist gang, but he is a "repentant" member and may get off with a short sentence. Meanwhile, in court one day, she meets 18-year old Andrea, and things happen. Oddly, the actor seems to have never appeared in another film. Perhaps the most explicit and controversial scene in this one was too much for him. Still, his performance is quite good. Detmers' performance is harder to rate. Her character is not exactly sane, and she has a habit of giggling maniacally at the strangest times. But, it's convincing enough that you have to admire it, as well as her willingness to....well, if you aren't easily (or not so easily) offended, just watch it for the long lingering close-ups and a lot of things hidden beneath the surface that you have to figure out for yourself. And the ending--well, it's pretty intellectual. At least I think it is.… (lisätietoja)
