While I anticipated this book to go over the basics, I was pleasantly surprised to fine that it goes in depth to what every code means. It even goes as far as detailing what light errors might be on in the car and where to proceed. I would say it is a "how to" guide that anyone interested in working on cars, especially starting off, should have in their collection. It is a huge bonus to me that it includes a section of other books that are more specified to cars or parts that you may need. I have almost 20 years of automotive experience, am a certified tech, and I still found this book to be an excellent reference. Unlike the basic reference book that I was expecting, this text had an interesting examination of the history of diagnostic systems leading up to OBD-II. And beyond just a basic list of codes the book does a good job of explaining the codes and the systems that are affected. A lot of people, particularly those with no professional background, assume that that diagnostic codes are a quick fix solution, look up a code and you instantly know what's wrong with the car. This book does a good job of explaining the reality of diagnosing a car and while no text can replace real-world experience, this one is a great way to get started and to keep as a regular reference.

I've had a basic OBD scanner for my car for quite a number of years, and it's really paid off. Mine's not a complicated model, it just does a basic reading and gives you the P-codes for what's wrong, but it's more than paid for itself over the years and I really think anyone with a car that's OBD-equipped should have one, you're probably wasting money on repairs if you don't. When I saw this book available through an early reviewers program, I immediately saw the opportunity to improve my knowledge of the subject and requested a copy. Thankfully, my request was granted and I received one, and for an automotive amateur like myself, it was pretty eye-opening. There's a lot of historical information included so that even someone like myself can get an understanding of the development of OBD, what it is, and what it might become in future, but there's also a large volume of technical information included to expand one's knowledge of OBD systems.
The great thing about this book is that it contains valuable information for novices like myself (plus it was nice to find out that my old OBD scanner can be affordably replaced with an OBD dongle and phone app that may include more features and information, for one) as well as more advanced information for people who spend a lot more time studying automotive issues. Either way, I definitely recommend it. Both the scanner and the book, they're a great opportunity to stop ignoring that check engine light without spending too much money, and to learn to take better care of your car.… (lisätietoja)
