This is a multi-faceted acccount of a n exploration and its members, history, conditions. Ultimately, it feels a bit puffed-up for an event that was hugely significant but barely got underway before it ended. Well-written, though, and unbiased, as far as I can tell, although clearly trying to absolve the team fro any accusations there might have been before..
I'm not usually a fan of history or biographies, but I found the story of Marshall "Major" Taylor fascinating. From the first chapter, the author paints a picture of cycling at right around 1900 that sets the story up in a fascinating light. At that point there were no real spectator sports, no Hollywood, even Broadway hadn't gotten big yet. Cyclist were the biggest celebrities in the world.
Major Taylor, at a time when slavery had only recently been abolished and segregation was a reality all over the world, managed to make a way for himself to become the World's Fastest Human Being.
Regardless of if your into cycling or not, you'll really enjoy this book. And it just might make you want to dust off your bike and cruise the neighborhood.… (lisätietoja)

Very interesting historical account of the first explorations into the Panama Canal area.

Excellent book. Kane was the Shackleton of the North though his ordeal predates Shackleton by 70 years. One minor thing. He said we don't know what happened to Franklin expedition. They found three bodies that died from lead food poisoning.
It's too bad Kane is not as well remembered today as he should be. He was quite famous in his day. Hopefully, this small tome will go to rectifying that.
