In Self and Soul, Lorraine Ash invites us on her journey deep into the core of her greatest source of pain-the stillbirth of her only child in this beautifully written memoir which explores the search for meaning after a tragic loss.

This is not a book that I read in one sitting even though it was only 177 pages. It was a book I read slowly and savored as she artfully unfolded the layers of her spiritual journey in a way that helped me connect with my own spiritual journey. For all of us, life is filled with challenges which often feel insurmountable so the universality of her message resonated.

Her writing, eloquent and rich in detail, felt like it came from the depth of her pain and led me through her pathway to hope and healing. The interweaving of her specific, conscious attempts to understand herself, such as descending into a cave, her exploration of how famous people, like Winston Churchill found meaning in their lives and her personal reflections about her loss and her own spirituality kept me spellbound to the story. “ By and large, though, living a life of value is much more a mater of subtracting trappings and superfluities, affectations and delusions of grandeur until we are left only with the real riches: Silence, faith, God ,the essence of who we are.” (p.133)

I highly recommend this lovely spiritual memoir. It is like a guidebook for transcending loss and finding meaning in your life.
