The story starts with an 8 and 9 year old brother and sister discovering a body in the woods. Because they were foster children they’re afraid to tell anyone, somehow thinking they’ll be blamed. Twenty years later the boy is still living with “auntie” and doing handyman and gardening work but the girl ran off at 16 and has been in and out of trouble. While gardening for a retired police detective he tells him the story of how he and his sister discovered the body covered with leaves and how his sister took a bracelet from the body and kept it after he told her to throw it away. Josh recently discovered it among his sister’s things and feeling guilty decided to tell the retired policemen who happened to work the case of the missing girl that was never solved and wants to help bring closure to the family and close the case.… (lisätietoja)

This was my first time reading a novel by Ann Granger. Lizzie Martin takes up the post of companion to her godfather's widow. Circumstances and a brief association with a Scotland Yard inspector puts her directly in the path of a murder mystery. Overall, I thought this was a solid story with likable main characters and just enough twists and turns to keep me interested.

I'm a little surprised by the mediocre ratings on Goodreads but as often happens lately, my opinion didn't align with the majority of reviews.
