I was excited to read this: people enrolled in intergalactic competitions and battles and such are right down my alley, but this book is terrible. Seriously awful.

The writing is clunky, the dialogue and characters are cringy, and nothing is subtle. Immediately the reader is told that Susan/Sunshine is young, fit, and attractive, whereas Clint is older. Susan/Sunshine make jokes about it constantly (and I mean constantly), flirting and bantering even though they have no chemistry and Sunshine has amnesia. Right away she starts calling him "daddy" (gross) and when a teenager (who is stereotypical dumb, annoying, and self-obsessed) joins them, Sunshine immediately refers to them as a family. It's all so heavy handed, rushed, and implausible.… (lisätietoja)

This was...odd. Not in a bad way. While I wouldn't say I loved it, I didn't hate it either. I did love the plot twists though! The characters were interesting, and the situation they find themselves in is terrifying. Definitely a page-turner that will have you wondering just what is going to happen next.

The publisher gives a good summary of the plot: A girl, young woman, and a man discover themselves in a countryside void of people and imprisoned by thick fog. Brought together by circumstance, the three confront bizarre, life-threatening challenges as they try to unravel the mystery. Dependent on one another, the unlikely trio must find a path to rejoin humanity.

This isn't apocalyptic fiction, although at the beginning it could easily have gone that way. What it is, however, is unclear for a long time. Certainly it's suspenseful, with the three characters running into strange circumstances again and again. They begin as strangers but slowly grow on each other and learn to trust each other's instincts, but why they have such good instincts is hard to fathom. For a patent lawyer, a woman with no memory, and a young teenager obsessed with her cell phone, they have some extraordinary innate abilities to cope with emergency situations, and let that be a clue. (They're not super heroes.) But still, I dare say you won't see the truth of the situation very quickly.

There are some quibbles: both the teenager and the woman have a habit of giving the man a hard time, with the woman repeatedly warning that he has "no chance" (and given their circumstances, he's not looking for one). The teenager acts like a younger kid much of the time, and even given the scary situation they're in, she complains way too much, questioning the adults over and over about the reasons for their plans. Both females get freaked any time there's a chance the guy will see them undress. My own thought each time was, "Really, THIS is your overriding concern?" I get it that the author wanted to show that the girl is young and the woman is upset that she can't remember her past, but it was way too repetitive. Where was the editor? WAS there an editor?

But given my complaints, I have to say I zipped right through this (OK, I skimmed some parts and seem to have missed nothing consequential) and ended up liking the book way more than I expected. It really was fun.

Ross Barton is a botanist, a professor at the University of Indiana. It's established early on that he's a nice guy but socially awkward with women. However, he also has some serious grit, demonstrated by his heroic actions when there's a crash at the airport where he's taking helicopter flying lessons.

But Ross isn't sticking around Indianapolis for the summer. He's heading off to Vermont for a research trip, collecting data for an evolution-modeling computer program. He leaves behind, for further consideration later, a relationship with a girlfriend that he's recently learned, due to an overheard telephone conversation, is a good deal less romantic than he had imagined. Marsha is in it for connection and security, not because she finds him exciting and romantic.

So off he goes to Vermont, where nothing about his first couple of days goes right. The motel is a dump, his upset over discovering Marsha's real intentions led him to leave behind vital supplies he now has to buy all over again, and in the process, he literally walks into a lovely but hostile woman who says her name is Jay.

Then he keeps running into Jay, even once he's out on the trail. And this odd woman is definitely hiding something.

It turns out her secret is literally out of this world. Ross finds himself caught between the US military trying to find the alien visitors they know are in the area (because they damaged the aliens' ship, and captured and dissected some of them), and Jay's desperate mission to rescue Ruthran children on what was supposed to be a harmless school field trip.

I like Ross, and Jay. Oswald the screech owl almost works. The impossible things in this story, though, just aren't adequately supported, and my suspension of disbelief kept breaking. I wanted so badly to like this book, but in the end, like Oswald the screech owl, it only almost works, and is, ultimately, not quite ready for prime time. Hopefully, Andrade will get a good editor, and continue to grow as a writer.

An okay light read.

I received a free electronic galley of this book from the publisher via NetGalley.
