Shiiba Masaki is a detective in the COC5, a unit of the Metropolitan Police Bureau that investigates arms smuggling. To aid his work, Shiiba has an S, an informant from a criminal organization. It's delicate and often unsavoury work, balancing the careful relationship and trust of his S while cracking down on gun crime, and things are further complicated when Shiiba gets an anonymous call telling him to "watch out for his S".

If you've read any yaoi/BL manga, this novel isn't going to be unfamiliar territory. It's a basic yakuza story, with two hot guys on opposite sides of the law and strictly defined seme/uke roles. I will give credit to the author that the characterization does sometimes stray from what's conventional for this genre but there's also very little fleshing out of the main cast to begin with (Munechika, in particular, is absolutely shrouded in mystery). The author also doesn't really develop the interactions or relationship between the two central characters any more than what is absolutely necessary to move the story forward, so I feel that this book was really lacking in a lot of detail. The way the two characters meet, become attracted to each other, and finally get together seems really choppy and disjointed, and I fail to see how they have any real chemistry or understanding of each other. Instead, pages and pages of this book were filled with dry info-dumps on police procedure and criminal investigation, but the majority of it didn't seem at all necessary in understanding the plot.

I'm shocked as this series is so often recommended among yaoi readers. However, I suspect this first volume only serves as an introduction to the world of S and there will be more character development in the next books. I will read on (there are so few translated BL novels as it is!) but I'm not super keen at this point.

Detective Shiiba Masaki has been working with his S (an informant with ties to the yakuza), Munechika Keigo, and is starting to fall for him. Meanwhile, he takes on a new assignment, helping a colleague of his, Nagakura, who has his own problems related to S work.

I enjoyed this a lot better than the first volume. There's far less info-dumping and the detective plot is more interesting as well. In particular, the introductions of Nagakura and Mao give us another perspective on a detective and his S, and I really wished there was more to their story. Having this second pair as a comparison, it really makes Shiiba and Munechika's relationship seem quite reckless, and S work an incredibly risky endeavour.

There's more character development as well, although as with the first volume, I feel like while the author does sometimes stray beyond the typical yaoi characterizations, she never goes too far. However, there's a certain scene between Shiiba and Munechika at the end of the 6th chapter which reveals another side of Munechika which I really did not like. I mean, I guess I shouldn't be surprised since this is a typical yaoi development, but I'm really disappointed to see it in this story, especially when it seemed like the author was beginning to step outside of the usual tropes. Aside from that scene, though, this was a quite a good read and a pleasant surprise after a lackluster first volume.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as the first. Munechika's character kind of did a 180, chalked up to "frustration" and it was just inappropriate for the cause and the character. Also, Shiiba is getting annoying with his whole identity crisis and toxic masculinity. It's a common yaoi trope - "gay for only you" - but Shiiba's inner monologues about it all instead of just having an actual conversation with Munechika is frustrating for both Munechika and the reader.
These are easy reads with an interesting premise so I'm blasting through them quicker than I normally would with books but I think I'll be done after the 3rd one if the characters don't develop a little more.… (lisätietoja)

This is the first light novel (Japanese translated short novel with some illustrations) I've read. I usually don't enjoy translated books because the language can seem stilted or oversimplified, and found that that remains true. However, the plot of "S" kept me interested.
This follows a young police detective working undercover in order to apprehend gun and drug smugglers in Japan. Each undercover agent in his unit has an informant that they're responsible for, called an "S" (for "spy"). I thought that choice was weird because S is used in a lot of BL to refer to sadists (as in S&M) so it made me smirk the first couple of times Andou is referred to as an S in this book.
Overall, this read like a typical m/m fanfiction with a lot of overly-dramatic scenes and dialogue and some ridiculous sex scenes, but I enjoyed it enough to continue the series.
